CONTRACT BRIDGE -
is a surprisingly modern card game, having developed (from Auction Bridge) less than a century ago;
to some extent it is still evolving, although that is now largely in detail.
The original form known as 'RUBBER BRIDGE' is still played widely, mostly as a social game but to some extent in gambling;
and the competitive 'DUPLICATE BRIDGE' form is played widely in clubs and competitions.
Regarded a 'mind sport' by some, there is no doubt that many benefit from playing it in a number of ways.

Your Tutor:

Paul Goddard learnt to play Bridge in the 1960s, using a bidding he describes as 'Standard RAF', but lapsed on moving to this area. Prior to that, he had literally lived the old cliché (even more unlikely now) of 'playing bridge with the bank manager'!

At the start of the 1980s, a Bridge club was formed at a pub in Turvey, and Paul became a member of the Three Cranes Bridge Club shortly after, and was soon playing there every weekend. He did not often play on weekday evenings, since his job could take him anywhere in the country at short notice, and getting home to Turvey was often erratic in it's timing !

He first taught Bridge at Night School in Sandy in 1989, close to his employer's premises, and did so until shortly prior to changes to his employment (following a takeover towards the end of 1990) meant that would no longer be practical.

In 1998, now established as a self-employed engineer, Paul organised a Bridge for Beginners course on behalf of the Cranfield Bridge Club at the Cranfield (University) Campus Social Club, assisting Alan Caves, the tutor employed to run it. The following year, he was teaching beginners while Alan ran a more advanced course; and, in the following year, he became the sole tutor.

Earlier this year, Paul attended a course for Club (Bridge) Teachers run by the EBU, as a result of which he is an Associate Member of EBUTA, the EBU's Teachers Association. Being now fully retired, he can devote the time to the expensive preparation needed to run the course well.

Above all, he believes learning should be fun; formal teaching will be kept to a practical minimum.

Our BRIDGE for BEGINNERS course:

The complete 12-WEEK course is aimed at complete beginners, and little or no knowledge of any card game is needed.

12 weeks - commencing 13th Sept. - costs £62

We also offer a 10-week option, for those with some previous knowledge of Bridge, or who are proficient at whist or solo.

10 weeks – commencing 27th Sept. - costs £55

In either case, fee includes a £20 text-book come work-book produced by the EBU as part of it's Bridge for All initiative. You will also become a 'Bridge for All' member of the EBU, and receive issues of it's magazine, called The Ruffian.

You will learn Contract Bridge, often using pre-dealt hands selected to suit the lesson, made possible by presenting them in a style ('boards') as used in Duplicate Bridge, together with scoring for Rubber (social) Bridge and it's Duplicate (club) Bridge offspring.

Throughout the course, coffee / tea and biscuits will be provided.

At the end of the follow-on course in Spring Term of next year, we would expect students to be competent social players, and ready to continue learning by playing Duplicate Bridge in the company of others at a similar level; for which we shall inaugurate a 'Beginners Night' formed from the course and meeting on Tuesday evenings, subject to there being sufficient interest.

In due course, we shall aim to provide a means to gently introduce our learners to the main Cranfield Bridge Club, which meets Sunday evenings.

Above and below was written for the course being a Tuesday class at Astwood Village Hall.
Unfortunately, numbers were inadequate for this course to be economically viable, and it has been cancelled.
These items of information remain to show the attitude existing then; and persisting now.
